ATTRIBUTED TO LOUIS TOCQUÉ (PARIS, 1696-1772) Portrait of the sculptor Jean-Louis Lemoyne (1665-1755) Oval pastel 66 x 45 cm Born into a dynasty of sculptors, the young Jean-Louis Lemoyne was destined for a career in art. A student of the famous Antoine Coysevox, his undeniable talent allowed him to join the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1703 by presenting a "marble bust of the Sieur Mansard, protector of this Company, which he had been ordered for his reception". Throughout his career, the artist will respond to many prestigious commissions and portraying the profiles of his most eminent contemporaries. At the height of his career, Lemoyne was also called upon to participate in the construction of the stuccoed decoration of the royal chapel of the Château de Versailles. An original version of our pastel by Louis Tocqué is held in a private collection.
