Attributed to Fra Guglielmo DELLA PORTA (circa 1515 - 1577) The crucified Christ Sculpture in gilded and silvered bronze presented on a cross in an ebony frame, brass fillet on red tortoiseshell-like plates. Christ: Height: 36 cm - Width: 28 cm Frame: Height: 73 cm - Width: 48 cm Born into a famous family of sculptors from the Lombardy Lakes, Guglielmo Della Porta (1510-1577) made his mark in Rome thanks to Michelangelo, with whom he befriended in the 1530's. He succeeded in making his practice a pole of attraction for young artists with diverse specialties. The talented people he surrounded himself with enabled Della Porta to realize projects ranging from large architectural ensembles such as the tomb of Pope Paul III in St. Peter's Cathedral to precious metal works such as the series of gilded bronze and silver reliefs of the Flagellation (e.g. Victoria and Albert Museum inv. no. A.1-1977), cornering the market on large and small commissions in Rome. Under Della Porta's tutelage, star sculptors such as Giambologna and Willem van Tetrode honed their design and technical skills. LITERATURE J. Montagu, Gold, Silver and Bronze.
