ITALIAN ECOLE TO THE 1700's AFTER JOHN OF BOLOGNA (1529-1608 - Lot 219
ITALIAN ECOLE TO THE 1700's AFTER JOHN OF BOLOGNA (1529-1608) Flying Mercury Bronze with brown patina H. 82 cm Related work: -John of Bologna known as Giambologna, Mercury, bronze, H. 170 cm, Florence, Bargello National Museum, inv. Bronzi 449. This bronze is a reduction of one of the most famous Mannerist sculptures by the Flemish sculptor living in Florence, John of Bologna. The original work translates into three dimensions the Mercury painted by Raphael for the Villa Farnesina in the early 16th century. The feat of balancing on one leg, the multiplication of angles of view, and the elegance of the figure explain the immense success of this work, which has had numerous bronze editions in various dimensions since the end of the 16th century.
