ATTRIBUTED TO FRANÇOIS DE TROY (1645-1730) Presumed portrait of the Duchess of Maine in a castle, holding a mirror, surrounded by three putti Oil on canvas (restorations) 45 x 35 cm Portrait by François de Troy, one of the most famous painters of his generation, this richly dressed young woman could well be the Duchess of Maine, probably depicted at the castle of Sceaux, the estate she transformed into a kind of court of the beaux-esprits of her time. A formidable portraitist recognized by the Academy, which he joined in 1674, de Troy painted several portraits of the duke and the duchess of Maine, the most spectacular of which are preserved in public collections.
