19th CENTURY ITALIAN ECOLE AFTER ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822) - Lot 117
19th CENTURY ITALIAN ECOLE AFTER ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822) Dancers with cymbals Plaster proofs with adjustments H. 180 cm Minor wear and accidents Related works: -Antonio Canova, Dancer with cymbals, marble, H. 187 cm, Berlin, Bode-Museum, inv. Nr. 2/81 , -Antonio Canova, Dancer with cymbals, plaster, H. 187 cm, Possagno, Gipstoeca, inv. n. 199. Related literature: -Giuseppe Pavanello, Mario Praz, L'opera completa del Canova, Milan, Rizzoli, 1976, models listed under no. 232 and 233, pp. 120-121. These two Dancers with Cymbals are loosely based on a commission from the Russian ambassador to Vienna, Kyrillovic Razumovskij, to Canova in 1812. The original marble, completed in 1815, is now in the Bode Museum (Berlin) and the plaster version in the Gypsotheca in Possagno. The landmarks visible on our plaster casts indicate that the works were probably transcribed into marble or stone. It should be noted that the workshop of Adamo Tadolini (1788-1868), very active in Rome in the second half of the nineteenth century, took over this iconic model.
