Denis Foyatier, a pupil of Chinard, Marin and then Lemot, created Spartacus breaking his bonds during a trip to Rome between 1822 and 1825. Inspired by the Antiquities and the works of the Renaissance, the sculptor wanted to summarize the condition of the hero: "I wanted to render in a single action, three periods of the life of my hero, his slavery, his freedom and his revenge". Following the success of the bronze at the 1827 Salon, the Minister of the Household of King Charles X commissioned the artist to produce a marble version.
