ANGELO CAMPANELLA (1746-1811), ENGRAVER ANTON... - Lot 82 - Osenat
ANGELO CAMPANELLA (1746-1811), ENGRAVER ANTON RAFAEL MENGS (1728-1779) AND ANTON VON MARON (1733-1808) Series of three prints out of twelve published by the architect Camillo Buti representing the frescoes of the Villa Negroni-Montalto, work after Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) and his brother-in-law Anton Von Maron (1733-1808). Gouache on engraved lines. - Adonis going hunting - Minerva in front of a trophy The 2nd century Villa Negroni was excavated in Rome in 1777, uncovering the wonderfully well-preserved Pompeian murals. The frescoes were bought and deposited by the English merchant Henry Tresham but were lost, as well as the villa which was destroyed. Only the engravings by Campanella, after the models of Anton Raphael Mengs and his brother-in-law Anton von Maron, allow us to appreciate the wall decorations. These sheets were published by the architect Camillus Buti under the title "Picturae parietinae inter Esquilias et Viminaelm collem superiori anno detectae" between 1778 and 1793 for documentation and graphic inspiration. The decorations of the Villa Negroni directly inspired the pompeian room of Lord Bristol at Ickworth House in Suffolk. A series of these plates are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and another in the British Museum. - Hetty Joyce, "The Ancient Frescoes from the Villa Negroni and their Influence in the Eight-eenth and Nineteenth Centuries," The Art Bul-letin (1983): LXV,3, pp.423-440
