TAPESTRIAN PANEL WITH SMALL STITCHES Oudenaarde, Flanders. Late sixteenth-early seventeenth century Atalanta in a decor of Hesperides, garden, on the left we see an army in perspective and Atalanta in the foreground, surrounded by a crown of flowers and fruit. In the background on the right two characters and a cherub near a lush vegetation of cabbage leaves called aristolochia Work on wool and silk canvas on cotton foundations with mahogany wood frame 102 x 193 cm History: in Greek mythology, Atalanta was a young woman warrior that no one could beat in the race on foot. One day, a young man succeeded in slowing her down by sowing golden apples in her path, which intrigued her and which she bent down to pick up.
