MILITARY ACADEMY Large writing portfolio of General DUTEIL d'OZANNE commanding the Prytanée militaire In green morocco, with gusseted pocket lined with light blue silk, flap and covers decorated in gold with Greek friezes and the inscription "Mr. GENERAL DUTEIL COMdt LE PRYTANEE MILITAIRE". With pen compartment and inkwells in four parts, decorated with friezes of leaves. Clasps and lock entrance in silver plated brass. 35 x 42 cm. A.B.E. (lock entrance to be reattached, minor wear). First Empire period History: Intended to prepare for military schools, the prytanée national militaire was located at its creation (under its current name) in Saint Cyr l'école. It was commanded by Duteil d'Ozanne, a veteran of the wars of the Ancien Régime and the Revolution. In 1808, Napoleon wished to recover Fontainebleau for his personal use, so the Ecole spéciale militaire was relocated to Saint Cyr, and the Prytanée to La Flèche. Duteil, whose command was unanimously applauded, and who was able to maintain calm within the institution at the end of the Empire, left the school in 1815. It should be noted that he is cited in some biographies as the first commandant of the École spéciale militaire (in fact, it is General Bellavène), a confusion that is quite understandable since the first location of the Prytanée was at Saint Cyr. Biography : Gilbert Louis Robinet Duteil d'OZANNE (1746-1826) He entered the service on March 1, 1763, in the King's bodyguard and was discharged on January 1, 1776. Sub-governor of the king's pages in the Grande Écurie, he was appointed captain attached to the dragoon corps on June 2, 1777. He was attached to the Lorraine Dragoon Regiment on May 24, 1778, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel on April 5, 1780, and was made a knight of Saint-Louis on March 21, 1784. He was promoted to marshal of camp on October 2, 1792, and in March 1793, he was assigned to the army of the Pyrenees. On March 23, 1793, he resigned for health reasons. On March 30, 1800, he joined Versailles as inspector commanding the cavalry remount depot. On December 29, 1801, he was sub-inspector of the 2nd class at the reviews in Versailles. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor on 27 Nivôse year XIII (17 January 1805), and on 15 December 1805, he was the first commander of the Prytanée militaire. He was created knight of the Empire by letters patent of March 29, 1809. During the first restoration, King Louis XVIII made him a knight of Saint-Louis and an officer of the Legion of Honor on October 24, 1814. He was appointed lieutenant-general available on November 2, 1814, and he was admitted to retirement on January 26, 1816. He died on September 24, 1826, in Ollainville.
