DUC D'ANTIN - LA GRENOUILLERE. Large rectangular book-like box, in wood covered with burgundy morocco, decorated with a small iron in gold. Dish with the big arms of Louis Antoine duc de Gondrin, duc d'Antin, marked with the small iron in gold " All that concerns the places of the Grenouillère ". Decorated with the four corners of the crowned Tower. Four-point lock with cut platinum, fleurdelisée, lion's head poucier. The sides, one with the inscription "Place de la Grenouillère" and the other with the crowned Towers. Lined inside with blue moire of the period. Wear, missing on the corners, rubbing. 32 x 46 x Ht. 17 cm. 18th century. History: On the banks of the Seine, was in the lands of the Duke of Gondrin, a vast wasteland, called "Grenouillère" along a port of the same name, between the Pont Royal and our Pont de la Concorde. This land corresponds to the Quai d'Orsay nowadays. It was modernized by the will of Louis XIV who found that "the Quai de la Grenouillère makes a very unpleasant object to the aspect of the Louvre and the Thuilleries" Biography : Louis Antoine de PARDAILLAN de GONDRIN, duc D'ANTIN (Paris 1665-Paris 1736) Son of the Marquise de Montespan, future favorite of Louis XIV. Famous for his courting, he was appointed by Louis XIV governor of Orléans (1707) and then superintendent of the King's Buildings (1708) and directed the Council of Interior Affairs of the Kingdom (1715-1718), during the Regency.
