PRECIOUS SMALL POCKET LANTERN, ROUND, IN MOTHER-OF-PEARL, HOOK CLOSURE AND GOLD PUNCHED PATTERN. Opened, it unfolds a pleated paper lantern decorated with flowers and polychrome foliage. Bottom with pivot for the candle which, closed, maintains the locking hook. Accompanied by two handwritten bills of the period: "This small round mother-of-pearl lantern comes from Marie Antoinette Queen of France, wife of Louis Sixteen, it was given to Mr. Abbot Leconte, lord of Courmois near Rheims, chaplain of the Countess of Artois, wife of Charles X. The queen was going to pray with her lantern in her oratory." And "Lantern given to Mr. Abbot Le Conte chaplain of the Countess of Artois, abbot of the abbey of Humierre, canon of Toul, lord and priest of Courmois near Reims, Marne. This lantern comes from Marie Antoinette Queen of France, it is with this lantern that she was going to pray in her oratory. " Diameter : 7,5 cm. A.B.E. (very slight chip on the edge of the top, detached bellows). Late 18th century. Biography : Louis Marie LECOMTE, canon of Toul, chaplain of the Countess of Artois since the establishment of her House in 1773.
