FRAGMENT OF RED SILK PAINTED IN WHITE, AND... - Lot 59 - Osenat
FRAGMENT OF RED SILK PAINTED IN WHITE, AND YELLOW AND BLACK BANDS. 26 x 2 cm. (Traces of dirt on a large part of the fragment, a part having kept its original colors) Presented with a late 18th century, early 19th century provenance paper "Piece of the flag of the Swiss indignantly massacred in Paris on August 10, 1792." History: This fragment of painted silk could belong to a flag (or a tie from one of the flags) of the Swiss Guards. The majority of the unit's flags were buried in the barracks of Rueil and Courbevoie on August 4 and 8, 1792 by the men of the regiment. Five were buried in Courbevoie (including an older flag) and six in Reuil, including four flags that were no longer in service. On the other hand, three of them, including the white flag, were at the Tuileries during the day of August 10, a day of sinister memory for the Swiss. The fate of these flags is partially known. Those of Rueil like a flag of the Tuileries will pass by the national assembly before being burned on August 14, 1793. Those of Courbevoie will be found without knowing more about their fate. The decoration of our fragment, painted, does not seem to correspond to the models of the flags used in 1792, whose colored flames were sewn but it could be an element of tie or an older flag. In the absence of provenance, the fragment and its paper of provenance having been found in a book of the revolutionary period, we can only note that the dirt found on our fragment could correspond to one of the buried flags. Bibliography : Proceedings of the symposium on the Swiss Guards (1988) We thank M.Jean-Philippe Ganascia, president of the Sabretache for his precious help.
