SAVOIE (CHRISTINE DE FRANCE, DUCHESS DOWAGER... - Lot 23 - Osenat
SAVOIE (CHRISTINE DE FRANCE, DUCHESS DOWAGER OF). Letter signed "Chrestienne", to the marquis Ghiron Francesco Villa. Turin, July 2, 1652. 1 p. in-folio, address on the back with red wax seal; cracks due to the closing system of the letter "La v[ost]ra lettera del primo del corrente ci reca avvisi della prossima caduta di Crescentino. Speriamo in ogni caso che la v[ost]ra presenza in coteste parti habbia potuto invigorire i difensori e muovere gl'assalitori a migliorare le conditioni d essi. Haverete dal marchese di Pianella inteso quel tanto che ci poteva occorrere in questo proposito, mentre rimanendo noi con molto senso di non poter fare in queste congiunture tutto quello che vorressimo per troncare il progresso dell'armi nemiche (che per altro restiamo sodisfattissima delle vostre operationi)..." On June 25, 1652, the Spaniards laid siege to Crescentino, a place located between Turin and Casale Monferrato, and took possession of it on July 3, 1652. The action of Ghiron Francesco Villa allowed the recapture of this place in September of the same year. INTIMATE FRIEND AND STATE COUNSEL OF CHRISTINE OF FRANCE, THE MARQUIS VILLA WAS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE FRANCOPHILE PARTY IN PIEMONT, being in direct contact with cardinal Mazarin. Appointed colonel of cavalry in 1641, he took an active part, until 1659, in the fights of the duchy of Savoy in the region of Asti and Monferrato against the troops of the Spanish duchy of Milan led by his intimate enemy the Marquis of Caracena. He also carried out diplomatic missions and organized a network of spies in Milan. His military fame and his links with France led him to be chosen to take charge of the island of Candia (Crete), which was under siege by the Turks, from 1665 to 1669.
