LOUIS XVI. Signed document (secretary),... - Lot 18 - Osenat
LOUIS XVI. Signed document (secretary), countersigned by Antoine de SARTINE as Secretary of State of the Navy. Fontainebleau, November 1, 1776. 1/2 p. large copper engraved folio with handwritten additions, armorial wax seal under paper, some staining and soiling; framed under glass. "His Majesty having chosen sr. Charles Robiou de Mareuil to serve as second lieutenant of the white infantry company and militia of the PORT-AU-PRINCE district, PARISH OF CUL-DE-SAC IN ISLE S[AIN]T-DOMINGUE..." As Secretary of State for the Navy from 1774 to 1780, with the rank of Minister of State from 1775, Antoine de Sartine demonstrated his usual efficiency, and succeeded in providing France with the most powerful navy it had ever had. The costs of this ambitious policy, however, caused a conflict with the director general of finance Jacques Necker and led Louis XVI to dismiss him - the king did so with regret and granted a generous pension to Antoine de Sartine.
