Versailles, December 24, 1745. 3/4 p. in-4, address on spine, red wax armorial seal perfectly preserved; marginal tear to address leaf due to opening without affecting text, scratched inscription in upper margin of first page, trace of tab in margin of last page. "MY COUSIN, THE INFANT TOLD THE M[ARECH]AL DE MAILBOIS THAT THE KING OF SPAIN WOULD MAKE HIM GREAT AS SOON AS HE INFANT WOULD HAVE TAKEN POSSESSION OF THE CITY OF MILAN. That must be done now. I willingly consent to the grace that the king my uncle is willing to give him, but it was not I who asked for it for him and I knew nothing about it. I am writing this one to you for your particular instruction, which you must keep in the greatest secrecy, and so that you conduct yourself accordingly... ". Made Marshal in 1741, Jean-Baptiste François Desmarets de Maillebois (1682-1762) was sent to Italy in 1745 to fight against the Austro-Sardinians, alongside the Spanish army led by the Infant Philippe de Bourbon, son of King Philippe V of Spain (himself a grandson of Louis XIV). He won a victory at Bassignano in September 1745, allowed the entry of the Infant in Milan on December 19, and was in reward made great of Spain. However, the Franco-Spanish troops suffered a series of setbacks and had to withdraw. Provenance : stamped with the letter " M " crowned.
