THE CHEMIST AND MINERALOGIST BALTHASAR-GEORGES SAGE (1740-1824) founded in 1783 the École des Mines, which he directed and where he taught chemistry, mineralogy and docimasie, i.e. Among his students were Jean-Antoine Chaptal and Jean-Baptiste Louis de Romé de L'Isle. A member of the Academy of Sciences, he was one of the great analytical chemists of the eighteenth century, a skilled manipulator and an excellent teacher: he remains famous for his work on the preparation of Prussian blue and on the desalination of sea water, but he failed to recognize the importance of Lavoisier's work and refused to abandon the erroneous theory of phlogiston.
