PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Black panther walking,... - Lot 68 - Osenat
PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Black panther walking, circa 1914-20 Etching and gold leaf on basane (sheepskin) mounted on board by the supplier "Havard Frères" (supplier's stamp on the reverse) Signed and justified in pencil "épreuve d'essai. Jouve" at the bottom left in the margin Sheet: 58,2 x 66,7 cm Board: 52 x 61,4 cm Mr Dominique Suisse confirmed the authenticity of this work. Provenance: Private collection, Paris. Bibliography: F. Marcilhac, Peintre Sculpteur Animalier 1878-1973, Paris, Ed. de l'Amateur, 2005, p.64 (another proof on leather illustrated), and p. 362 (proof on Japan paper illustrated). Paul Jouve's work, along with that of Jacques Majorelle, Etienne Dinet, André Maire and Charles Dufresne, embodied the French artistic avant-garde abroad in the early 20th century. An explorer and adventurer in the colonial era, Jouve is known for his depictions of exotic animals. The Walking Black Panther is one of his most popular masterpieces, conceived in 1914 when Jouve had his first artistic success with the illustration of engravings for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. According to Félix Marcilhac, "It is a black panther studied at the zoo in Antwerp, the original drawing being dated July 1914, moreover, some copies were printed on basane, without numbering. The subject will be taken again in the album Jouve published by Apollo around 1931." The present copy of The Walking Black Panther is a unique variation of his iconic etching on a luxury medium, basane, which the artist exceptionally enhanced with gold leaf. Indeed, Jouve made five proofs of the Black Panther Walking on basane (see Marcilhac, p. 64), of which only one copy enhanced with gold leaf is known to date according to Dominique Suisse, the artist's specialist. In contrast to the better-known versions of the engraving, the present work is marked both by the refinement of the leather support and by the gold leaf covering the support. Etching and gold leaf on basane (sheepskin) mounted on supplier panel 'Havard Frères' (supplier stamp, on the reverse), signed and justified in pencil 'test proof. Jouve' bottom left in the margin. Sheet: 22.9 x 26.3 in. Board: 20.5 x 24.2 in.
