Biography : Great figure of the French silent cinema, Abel Gance imposes during the First World War an exacerbated lyricism, an unleashed imagination, a sense of lighting that cuts through the greyness of a national cinema that has not recovered from the shock of August 1914. In the 1920s, he was the man of an epic, visionary and excessive cinema that culminated in the unfinished Napoleon of 1927. He was also an inventor in the cinematographic field: notably the use of a triple screen for his films, or also the pictograph.
