VICTORIES AND CONQUESTS. 4 series of works... - Lot 21 - Osenat
VICTORIES AND CONQUESTS. 4 series of works published jointly, that is to say 35 volumes in-8 and an atlas in-folio oblong, several leaflets preserved bound in the volumes of text. - All in uniform bindings, bradel of half red long-grained morocco decorated with gilt fillets and cold motifs, boards covered with red morocco paper, green leather title-piece on the upper board of the atlas, minor snags to some headpieces and to a spine, leather reinforcement to the inner jaws of the atlas, stain retouching on the cuts and boards of the volumes, notably of the atlas, a facsimile detached from its tab, wetness on a third of the leaves of the atlas (period binding). FIRST EDITION. A VAST EDITORIAL ENTERPRISE OF MILITARY HISTORY ARTICULATED AROUND THE REVOLUTIONARY AND IMPERIAL PERIOD, published by the ambitious publisher Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke. The texts are due to the pen of several editors, the main one being General Charles-Théodore Beauvais de Préau, who, as the son of a conventional soldier, had served in Egypt (1798), in Spain (1810-1813) and in Germany (1813-1814). The important illustrations adorning the volumes were engraved on copperplate under the direction of Ambroise Tardieu. The Victories and conquests are in fact composed of several publications, both concomitant and successive, published in issues, and are rarely complete. The present copy includes: - VICTOIRES, CONQUETES, DESASTRES, REVERSES ET GUERRES CIVILES DES FRANÇAIS, DE 1792 A 1815. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1817-1822. 27 volumes in-8. A folding genealogical table printed outside the text. Volumes XXV and XXVI include a biographical dictionary called Tables du temple de la Gloire, appendices, errata, and a geographical index. Volume XXVII contains a Couronne poétique which gathers poems on the military history of that time, by Pierre-Jean de Béranger, Casimir Delavigne, Marie-Joseph Chénier, Évariste Parny, Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, etc. Illustrated with 187 plates out of text of which 103 are folding, that is: 170 maps and plans, a view of the pyramids (vol. IX), and 16 facsimiles of autograph documents (vol. XXVII). - VICTORIES, CONQUESTS, SETBACKS AND CIVIL WARS OF THE FRENCH, FROM THE GALLIC PEOPLE TO 1792. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1821-1823. 6 volumes in-8. A folding genealogical table printed outside the text. Illustrated with 25 copper engraved maps and plans out of the text, 6 of which are folding. Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke published again in 1825 a volume dedicated to the Spanish war of 1823, absent here, volume XXVIII whereas volume XXVII of the revolutionary and imperial series was qualified as "last volume". This volume on Spain would not be included in the second recast edition in 34 volumes of the two series above, published from 1828 to 1831. The publisher published in parallel 4 volumes of miscellanea entitled Annales des faits et des sciences militaires (1818-1819), absent here as most of the time. - PORTRAITS DES GENERAUX FRANÇAIS, following the Victoires et conquêtes des Français. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1818. 2 volumes in-8. Illustrated with 152 out-of-text portraits. - MONUMENS DES VICTOIRES ET CONQUETES DES FRANÇAIS. Collection of all the art objects, triumphal arches, columns, bas-reliefs, roads, canals, paintings, statues, medals, dedicated to celebrate the victories of the French from 1792 to 1815. Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1822. Oblong folio. A large part of the military texts is here due to the writer Jacques-Philippe Voïart, former military administrator and brother-in-law of the Minister of War Jean-Baptiste Bouchotte. 100 plates out of text, including a map, a view, and, engraved with the line, 98 historical scenes and representations of monuments. THE ILLUSTRATION INCLUDES HERE A TOTAL OF 464 PLATES ENGRAVED ON COPPER.
