JOSÉPHINE (Empress). Autograph letter to... - Lot 5 - Osenat
JOSÉPHINE (Empress). Autograph letter to "Mademoiselle Pauly at M[a]d[am]e de Saint-Aubin". Fontainebleau, "this 29 July" [probably c. 1785-1788]. 1 p. 1/2, address on spine, marginal wetness with missing pieces. The future empress Joséphine had befriended this daughter of a notable Fontainebleau man, whom she had undoubtedly met in the salon of her aunt by marriage Fanny de Beauharnais. In 1792, she would recommend Pauly to the Minister of War as a commissioner of war. "My courage to bear the pain caused by a number of pimples, which fortunately were placed on my finger, convinced me that I was really a strong woman (I am very happy that you do not doubt this, Mademoiselle), I do not believe that there is any suffering more cruel than that which I experienced, I do not remember the name given by Mr. Dassy [Augustin Dassy, doctor of the castle and hospitals of Fontainebleau, friend of the Beauharnais] to this illness, but he told my father-in-law and my aunt (who probably believed that I was not suffering as much as I was complaining) that I had to experience the pain caused by a fleece placed on my skin, that he had known a man who had had this same illness, that this man was crying out terribly, so they began to believe that I could really suffer. For the last two days I have been much better. I hope to be able to go to Paris at the end of next week, and you will be informed of the day of my departure from Fontainebleau. I saw your little one yesterday, she is doing very well, I found her very fat and grown up, it seems that her maid is taking great care of her, all the time she was with me she kept the most profound silence, I did however give her some candy. I LEAVE YOU, I AM PRESSED TO GIVE ME A STROKE OF THE COMB BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO SERVE. I only have time to kiss you with all my heart and to assure you that I love you just as much, goodbye, Miss, do not let anyone see my letter. Kisses for me my dear cousin... "
