BEAUHARNAIS (Eugène de). Autograph letter... - Lot 2 - Osenat
BEAUHARNAIS (Eugène de). Autograph letter signed as viceroy of Italy [probably to his secretary Étienne Méjan]. Mantoue, March 17 [1814], "at midnight". 1 p. in-folio, on wove paper gilded on edge with watermark with the effigy of Napoleon I, 2 small angular tears without damage to the text. Letter written shortly before the fall of the Empire. "ACCORDING TO ALL MY NEWS FROM PARIS, IT SEEMS PROBABLE THAT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, EVERYTHING WILL SOON BE OVER. One even gives for fatal term the 18th of the current. I hope that in these circumstances you will come and join me. Tomorrow I will spend a long day on the Mincio line. I will return only the day after tomorrow, so you can set out the next day. Bring with you the necessary notes or papers for the work that the end of all this may require. IF WE WERE MISTAKEN IN THIS LAST HOPE, I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE, THE DEVIL TAKES ME, WHERE IT WOULD LEAD US. Farewell, believe in all my attachment... "
