Peintre paysagiste, aquarelliste et graveur, c'est après son entrée à l'atelier de Jean-Alexis ACHARD à Paris en 1846 qu'Henri-Joseph HARPIGNIES ressent le besoin de se détourner de son pays natal pour découvrir l'Italie, la Hollande mais aussi Bruxelles. Fort de cette expérience, il choisit à son retour de rejoindre Jean-Baptiste Camille COROT au sein de l'Ecole de Barbizon. Henri HARPIGNIES connaît son premier succès en 1861 avec sa toile Lisière de bois sur les bords de L'Allier et ne cessera dès lors de triompher. Jusqu'à remporter, en 1900, le grand prix à l'exposition universelle. Landscape painter, watercolourist and engraver, this is after he entered the studio of Jean-Alexis Achard in Paris in 1846 that Henri-Joseph HARPIGNIES feels the need to turn away from his homeland to discover Italy, Holland and also Brussels. With this experience, he chose to return to join Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot in the Barbizon School. Henri HARPIGNIES knows his first success in 1861 with his painting "Wood strip on the banks of the Allier" and therefore will continue to triumph. Up to win in 1900, the grand prize at the Universal Exhibition
