Henri Félix Emmanuel PHILIPPOTEAUX (1815-1884) General Ponsonby wounded at the battle of Waterloo and treated by a doctor of the Napoleonic army Oil signed lower left F. Ph Wooden frame and gilded stucco 30 x 41 cm Bearing an inscription on the back: "Lord Ponsonby (?) general of the English dragoon wounded at Waterloo, treated by a French doctor, unaware of the name of his saviour, has commissioned Philippoteaux to reproduce the scene in the hope that by producing (?) a work of value he will find this doctor to show his gratitude". Biography William Ponsonby, born on October 13, 1772, and died on June 18, 1815, was an officer in the British army and an Irish politician. He died in battle during the Battle of Waterloo. General William Ponsonby was killed at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. From 1796 to 1798, William Ponsonby was a member of the Irish House of Commons, and then of the British House of Commons from 1812 onwards. After his death in 1915, George Robert Dawson was elected as the Member of Parliament for Londonderry. William Ponsonby was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1815, shortly before his death.
