45. COLBERT DE CHABANNAIS (Auguste de). Traditions and memories or Memoirs concerning the time and life of General Auguste Colbert (1793-1809). Paris, Librairie de Firmin Didot frères, fils et Cie, 1863-1873. 5 volumes in-8, (6)-v-(1 blank)-365-(3 of which the last blank) + 413-(3 of which the last blank) + (4)-432 + (4)-492 + (4)-479-(1 blank) pp. half-brown chagrin, gilded coat of arms on the upper cover of the first volume, spotted edges, spine faded (period binding).ORIGINAL EDITION. Biography established from the archives of the general, with numerous printed supporting documents. 16 lithographed maps out of the text, of which 5 folding and 3 double-page, some with hand-coloured highlights (Jean Tulard, Nouvelle bibliographie critique des mémoires sur l'époque napoléonienne, Paris, Droz, 1991, n° 469). ONE OF THE GREAT CAVALRY GENERALS OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE EMPIRE. He volunteered in 1792, served in the Vendée war and was taken as aide-de-camp by the future marshal de Grouchy. He then took part in the Irish expedition (1796), in the first Italian campaign where he was Murat's aide-de-camp (1797), in the Egyptian expedition where he was wounded at the siege of Saint-Jean-d'Acre (1798-1800), the second Italian campaign, where he fought at Marengo as Murat's aide-de-camp (1800), the Austrian campaign (1805), the Prussian campaign, where he served at Jena (1806), and the Polish campaign, where he fought at Friedland (1807). He was then posted to Spain, where he distinguished himself at Medina del Rio Seco under Marshal Bessières and at Tudela under Marshal Lannes (1808), but was killed by a bullet in the forehead during a charge the following year at the battle of Cacabelos against the English troops of Major-General Edward Paget.
