42. CAMBACÉRÈS (Jean-Jacques Régis). Letter signed as Archchancellor of the Empire, addressed to the Secretary of State of the Imperial Family Michel-Louis-Étienne Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély. Paris, 23 December 1809. 1 p. NAPOLEON I CONVITES THE COUNCIL OF FAMILY. "I warn you... that S[a] M[ajesté] the emperor sent me on the 22th of this month, a closed letter to order me to convene the Council of the imperial family which must be held at the palace of Thuileries, in the throne room. [HER MAJESTY HAS DEIGNED TO AUTHORIZE ME TO PRESIDE OVER THIS COUNCIL. She designated H[a] M[ajesty] the king of Westphalia [JEROME BONAPARTE], to be a part of it, and intends that M. the marshal duke of Conegliano be convened there as dean of the marshals [Bon-Adrien Jannot de MONCEY]. I had the honor of going to the King of Westphalia, and to His Majesty the King of Naples [JOACHIM MURAT], whom I did not find and who must attend the Council, as being the oldest of the great dignitaries. [His Majesty the King of Westphalia, having been kind enough to tell me, both in his name and in the name of the King of Naples, that he deems it appropriate that the Council be assembled tomorrow, Sunday the 24th of this month, at four o'clock in the afternoon, I beg you... to summon the Duke of Conegliano, and the other officials designated by article 34 of the Statute, you know that the Grand Judge exercises the functions of the Public Prosecutor's Office before the Council, he must also be summoned...". The Statute of the Imperial Family, promulgated in 1806, stipulated in its article 34 that the Family Council was to be presided over by the Emperor, or failing that by his Arch-Chancellor, and was to be composed of a prince of the Imperial House chosen by the sovereign of the prince grand dignitaries of the Empire enjoying the highest rank of seniority, of the dean of the marshals, of the chancellor of the Senate, of the first president of the Court of Cassation, of the grand judge minister of Justice and of the secretary of state of the imperial House.
