37. BONAPARTE (Napoleon). Autograph letter signed "Napolione di Buonapart" to the abbot Amielh, "director of the pupils of the king" in the seminary of Aix-en-Provence. Valence, 25 November 1785. 3 pp. in-4, address on the spine, mitered in an in-folio volume of red morocco, two-ribbed spine with gilt title, framed with nets, palmettes, pastilles and gilt and black fleurons, gilt edges (modern binding).ANOTHER LETTER AMONG THE FIRST KNOWN LETTERS FROM NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Sixteen years old, he had just been appointed on September 1, 1785 second lieutenant in the artillery regiment of La Fère stationed in Valence. "One could not be more sensitive than I am to the interest you are willing to take for us, one could not be at the same time more mortified by the trouble you have taken, I do not know how my dear parents could be worried for a moment. I wrote to them twice before leaving Paris, where I told them about the withdrawal of our place. I SEE MR DE MARBEUF [Louis-Charles-René de Marbeuf, then French governor of Corsica, linked to the Bonapartes] IN PARIS, WHO TOLD ME THAT LUCCIANO, MY BROTHER, COULD NOT BE BORN IN AIX, On the other hand, I had an extraordinary order to join the regiment at Valence, which I did, and I have been there for three weeks, during which time I have written three times to Corsica. Judge from this, Monsieur, if I am guilty of the slightest negligence, I should, it is true, have sent it to you, but I imagined that Mr. FESCH would have written to you. I will not have my semester until next September. At that time, Monsieur, I shall be delighted to have the pleasure of making the acquaintance of a man in whom I already take the keenest interest. Please pass on to me the letters you have been asked to write, although I do not know what they contain. I am with the greatest consideration your most humble and obedient servant... My compliments to my dear compatriots who are under your guidance..." THE SEMINARY OF AIX, ONE OF THE PLACES OF THE BONAPARTE GESTURE. Under the direction of Father Amielh, the seminary of Aix-en-Provence welcomed young Corsicans: uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte (he was the half-brother of Letizia Bonaparte), future archbishop of Lyon and great chaplain of the Empire, Joseph Fesch studied there from 1781 to 1786. He too was destined for Holy Orders but was still at the Brienne school at the time. Napoleon Bonaparte's brother and future minister Lucien Bonaparte entered the same seminary in Aix-en-Provence in 1786, but left at the beginning of the Revolution. PROVENANCE: ÉMILE BROUWET (No. 1 in the catalogue of the first part of the auction of his famous autograph collection, Paris, Drouot, 14 November 1934, with full photographic reproduction).
