16. BONAPARTE (Elisa). Letter signed "Elisa"... - Lot 16 - Osenat
16. BONAPARTE (Elisa). Letter signed "Elisa" with 3 1/2 lines autographed, addressed TO HIS BROTHER NAPOLEON I. Florence, 4 May 1809. 1 p. 1/2 large folio. "SIRE, WHEN YOUR MAJESTY DAIGNA CALLED ME TO THE GRAND DUCHY OF TOSCANY [on March 2, 1809], the three departments [constituting the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, that is to say the Arno, the Umbrone and the Mediterranean] hastened to send deputies to bring to the feet of the Throne the homage of their devotion, Your Majesty was leaving for the army at the moment of their arrival in his capital, where they await his orders. THE NEW PRODIGES OF HIS ARMS add to their mission. I charge them to go to Your Majesty in order to be there, in this so glorious circumstance, the organs of the gratitude and the wishes in the expression of which I associate myself with the peoples of Tuscany. IT IS BY SEEING HIS AUGUST PERSON IN THE MIDST OF HIS TRIUMPHES THAT THEIR DEPUTES WILL JUDGE BETTER ALL HIS GREATNESS; full of this spectacle, they will carry the feeling of it back to their fellow citizens. [In her hand, the Grand Duchess Elisa added: "I commend myself to the high protection of Your Majesty. I am with the most profound respect, Sire, of Your Imperial and Royal Majesty, the most devoted and submissive sister Elisa." HAPPY BEGINNINGS OF THE SECOND AUSTRIAN CAMPAIGN. While this power had joined a fifth coalition against France, initiated by England, and had just launched its army under the leadership of Archduke Charles, Napoleon I reacted with vivacity and attempted a first manoeuvre on Landshut, which did not produce the expected gains. He did, however, succeed in repelling the enemy with two successive victories at Eckmühl on 22 April 1809 and the next day at Regensburg - where the emperor received a slight wound above the ankle. The road to Vienna was then open to the French who entered on May 13.
