12. BERTHIER (Louis-Alexandre). Autograph letter signed to Michel-Louis-Étienne Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély. Moscow, September 19, 1812. 2 pp. in-12.RARISSIVE LETTER FROM MOSCOW OF THE MAJOR-GENERAL OF THE GRANDE ARMEE. It is moreover a signed friendly autograph letter, uncommon for this great character. "MY DEAR COUNT, IT IS ON THE ASHTRAYS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY THAT I THANK YOU for the marks of kindness and friendship that you have given me on the occasion of the birth of my daughter [his wife Marie-Elisabeth de Wittelsbach had given birth on August 22, 1812 of their second child, Caroline Joséphine] - I have not forgotten your son and I am proposing him again for a sub-lieutenancy [Auguste Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, future marshal of Napoleon III, was then serving in Russia]. THE EMP[EREUR] IS DOING BEST, our affairs are going well, but would you believe that a city of 300,000 souls could be entirely evacuated? But what you cannot believe and which is a proven truth, is that THE FIRE OF THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY WAS ORGANIZED BY THE Russians - and [that] even it has been burned in all its parts. In spite of this we find great resources and our army drinks good wine and has bread. Please believe in my old friendship... A thousand greetings to Madam Countess. The victory of Moskova on September 7, 1812 opened the access of the French troops to the city of Moscow where they entered on September 14. A terrible fire broke out on the night of the 15th to the 16th, which made it difficult to occupy.
