3. IMPERIAL ALMANACH, for the year M. DCCC.... - Lot 3 - Osenat
3. IMPERIAL ALMANACH, for the year M. DCCC. IX. Paris, Testu, 1809. Fort in-8, (2) pp. and 898 pp. numbered 1 to 426, 426bis, 426ter, and 427 to 896, red morocco, smooth spine partitioned and decorated with gilt designs including a crowned imperial eagle, bees and stars, large gilt frame decorating the boards with gilt coat of arms in the centre, ornamented edges, inner gilt roulette, lining and endpapers of green moire, gilt edges, corners slightly rubbed, a discreet restoration on the upper board (period binding).ONE OF THE VERY RARE COPIES PRINTED ON STRONG VELLUM. It presents some differences with the copies on edition laid paper: an additional title leaf, bearing on the verso the epistle of Hugues-Bernard-Maret to the editor (this epistle was printed on a separate leaf glued on the title page in the ordinary copies), the coat of arms of Napoleon I adorning the title is engraved on copper instead of wood, on the other hand, being part of the first edition, it does not include the appendix leaf paginated 897-898 indicating the "mutations that occurred during printing". A CHIFFLAIRE OF HUGUES-BERNARD MARET, who was the indispensable minister secretary of state of the Consulate from December 25, 1799, then of the Empire from 1804 to April 1811, from November 813 to April 1814 and from March 20 to June 22, 1815. Made Duke of Bassano in August 809, he was also Minister of Foreign Relations from April 1811 to November 1813, notably in Vilnius where he stayed during the Russian campaign. After the fall of the Empire, he was a prominent figure in Bonapartist circles, and found a short-lived ministerial portfolio under Louis-Philippe I in 1834. Provenance: a member of the British Order of the Garter (armorial vignette), then Gérard Souham (armorial vignette ex-libris).
