"MARECHAL BERTHIER LOUIS-ALEXANDRE (1763-1815). PRINCE OF WAGRAM. HESSE (Grand Duchy) ORDER OF LOUIS, instituted in 1807. Plaque of Grand Cross. Star with eight radiating branches, embroidered with canetille, lamé and silver spangles. Round center embroidered with the motto "GOTT EHRE VATERLAND" on a black velvet background. Embroidered legend of branches of oak leaves and laurel in green thread on a background of silver thread. Original paper lining. Diameter : 9 cm. T.T.B. First Empire period. (Small crushes on three spokes). Marshal L.A. Berthier was decorated with the Grand Cross of the order on August 03, 1809. Provenance : Marshal Louis Alexandre Berthier, then descendants, by inheritance. Private collection. History: The Order of Louis, in Grand Ducal Hesse, was founded by Grand Duke Louis Ier on August 25, 1807, but it was not until December 11, 1831 that it was named the Order of Louis by Grand Duke Ludwig II. It is divided into five classes: Grand Crosses, Commanders First Class, Commanders Second Class, Knights First Class and Knights Second Class. On one side of the cross is written in German: "For merit" and on the other: "God, honour, fatherland."
