KINGDOM OF ITALY ORDER OF THE IRON CROWN, instituted in 1805. Rare and large mantle plate of dignitary. Radiant star, with six main branches, in lamé and silver spangles, bordered with canetille. Center with background entirely embroidered with silver thread, with the Imperial Eagle on spindle surmounted by a star surmounting the Iron Crown in gold canetille, embroidered with yellow and red silk thread. Legend on green thread embroidered in gold canetille "DIO ME L'HADATA. GUIAI A CHI LA TOCCHERA" Garnished with its paper lining in shape. Diameter: 16,5 cm. T.T.B. First Empire period. History: On the model of our plate, it refers to the wishes of the Emperor, in his correspondence with his adopted son, the Vice King of Italy Eugene de Beauharnais. Letter of January 16, 1809 from Napoleon to Eugene. "This simple crown in the round, in the middle of which the eagle should be placed, would have something original. I have no objection to the star above the eagle with the words: Italiani, italiani, italiani. (...) Have me make this model, as I am telling you now.
