1935 PANHARD X73 CS Spéciale - Lot 52
1935 PANHARD X73 CS Spéciale N° 99539 Registration number: 1510 LH3 Special 1935 Vulka cabriolet bodywork To be registered in collection Panhard et Levassor, the oldest French brand was established in Ivry at the end of the 19th century. Synonymous with great luxury, the brand remained faithful to the valveless engine at the dawn of the 1930s and kept the 6-cylinder engine presented at the 1926 Salon. However, the chassis was bent at the front and rear, allowing the bodies to be lowered. The new model proved to be flexible and silent by using a freewheel system. Henri Bidon described it: "There are cars that are moving to look at, with their long muzzle, their balanced design and these receding lines which, at rest, are already speed". The Panhard cars with their small curved windows on each side of the windscreen ensured Panhard one of the greatest successes in its history from 1930 to 1936. They were awarded prizes in numerous elegance competitions (Deauville, La Baule, Biarritz, Le Touquet...). Thanks to its side windows, Panhard maintained that the vision was panoramic without blind spots, hence the name "Panoramic". "Panoramic". These models were used by the King of Morocco, Léon Blum, the actress Marie Dubois... The model presented here is one of the rare "Panoramic" that has come down to us. The mine type of the chassis is X73, so it is the CS Special model with a six cylinder engine of 2861 cc and a valve train. The advantages of this type of engine are mainly the quietness of operation and the torque available from the lowest rpm, which makes it very flexible. The X73 chassis was built from September 1934 to June 1938, but with 91% of the production in 1935/1936. Its bodywork is the spacious four-door, six-window interior which can comfortably seat seven people, two of whom can sit on folding seats. The code name for this body is "Vulus". The bodywork was manufactured by Delaugère in Orleans using an innovative "all steel" technique. The coachbuilder's plates are located on each side of the car. It is much rarer than the four-window saloon. In 1935, the 6C Special received a new 6-cylinder engine without valves, with a capacity of 2861 cc, which could reach a maximum speed of 144 km/. This was the first Panhard without a valve engine on "elastic suspension". These magnificent Art Deco cars are due to the talent of Alex KORR, the Panhard illustrator. Every detail is stylised, refinement is everywhere. At the time, they were the delight of their owners and of the elegance competitions where they were often awarded prizes. The car we are offering for sale has been with the same collector for 40 years. It has its original paintwork with the beginnings of a restoration. The upholstery is original, the engine is not blocked, the car is complete. According to the figures of the time, only 74 Panoramique VULKAs were produced and very few of them have reached us. It should be noted that in 1935 Panhard modified the bodywork by tilting the windscreen and the radiator in order to modernise it and make it more aerodynamic. Of this version after 1935, only two other fake cabriolet are known to have come down to us. That makes three now. This one was sold new on 17 June 1935 to Mr BELGRADE, a distiller in Breistroff in Moselle. A former customer of the brand, he had a 6CS Type X 68 or X 69 from 1930-31 taken back on purchase. It has its original registration, and we can assume that it has only had two owners up to now. It is an extremely interesting, prestigious and rare car. The operation of the Panhard et Levassor without valves is bewitching. Sometimes at the rally of the association of marque clubs, it is possible to see them running. The wide rear track and the low overall height give the car a stance that the other brands did not offer. Very smooth, they are easy to control and once tuned, they are very reliable. We would like to thank Mr Jean-Pierre HOSSANN, LVA correspondent, and Mr Arnaud BLANC of the Club des Doyennes de Panhard et Levassor for their contributions.
