Czech school , XVIIth century , Saint John... - Lot 172 - Osenat
Czech school , XVIIth century , Saint John Nepomuk , Oil on canvas, 87 x 70 cm + frame , Entirely restored, John Nepomuk (Pomuk 1340 - Prague 1393), patron saint of Bohemia, was a priest and martyr. He was killed on the orders of King Wenceslas IV with whom he was in conflict. His death led to the revolt of the Czech nobility from 1394 to 1402. There are several symbols that identify the saint: the miraculous appearance of five stars at the time of his death, the lock symbolizes his period of imprisonment, and the palm represents his martyrdom.
