Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) after - The... - Lot 96 - Osenat
Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) after - The lonely fisherman at Kajikazawa, Japan - Print from the series of "36 views of Fuji" - Fugaku sanjûrokkei. Size of the sheet : 19,5 x 29 cm + the frame - Publisher : Yuyudo , period : 1960's - This view presents a strong opposition between the immutability of the sacred mountain, which rises above thick layers of fog, and the animation (and the dramatic intensity) of the scene represented in the foreground: a fisherman, hunched over a rocky spur, seems to be struggling against a nature that is both hostile and nurturing , in keeping with Shinto spirituality, the man, isolated against a white background, bent over his nets, his body tense with effort and his mind focused on the action, is in symbiosis with the raging elements, swirling river waves, foaming waves, wind, and mist. This print, a true masterpiece, also bears witness to a borrowing from the Chinese masters, with a solid area in the foreground, with the waves, the rock and human activity, forming a contrast with an empty area (the sky and the mountain). Finally, the composition, which is based on two interlocking triangles, that of Fuji and that formed by the rocky promontory, the fisherman and his lines, is characteristic of the art of Hokusai.
