Kunichika Toyohara (1835-1900) - Sword duel... - Lot 86 - Osenat
Kunichika Toyohara (1835-1900) - Sword duel for love , Saya Ate , Japan - Tryptic of prints signed and dated : 1867 - Publisher: Yorozuya Zentaro - 36,4 x 75 cm + the frame - A saya ate is a sword duel between two warriors. In this scene, this word is associated with the confrontation between Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon, 2 samurais of the 16th century, both in love with the beautiful Oyuki, located in the middle. Love is subtly represented by pink petals of the cherry tree in the shape of a heart. This tryptic represents 'Saya Ate', a scene from the play 'Kikujido Karakuri Butai' performed at the Morita-za theatre in October 1867. This kind of scene could be played by mechanized automatons (Karakuri Butai), or by real actors, as here. It is one of the oldest themes of Japanese popular theater, already represented in the 17th century. The actors and their roles are, from left to right: - Sawamura Tossho II as Nagoya Sanza, - Otani Tomoemon V as waitress Oyuki - Bando Hikosaburo V as Fuwa Banzaemon.
