His office included the ordering of the expenses of the King's Chamber and also the administration of the Menus-Plaisirs. In this capacity, the Duc d'Aumont was responsible for the choice of architects, artists and craftsmen for this department of the King's Household, and in particular for the choice of François-Joseph Bélanger (1744-1818) and Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), who joined forces in 1769 to create the important jewel box of the dauphin Marie-Antoinette. In 1770, the duke extended the existing workshops of the Menus-Plaisirs to include the production of furniture bronzes and objets d'art, marble and hard stones. In his successive hotels, first in the Hôtel de Mailly and then from 1776 in his hotel on Place Louis XV, he assembled an important collection of works of art. When the Duke died on 13 April 1782, all the possessions in his hotel on Place Louis XV, now the Hotel Crillon on Place de la Concorde, were appraised. Among the numerous andirons inventoried from 1 May 1782 (A.N., M.C., ET/XXIII/783, inventory after death), only four pairs were selected for publication in the printed catalogue of the sale under the direction of the experts Philippe-François Julliot and Alexandre-Joseph Paillet (lots 360 to 363). The first two lots went to the Count of Artois, the other two pairs, including lot 363, were sold to the merchant Payant for 399 livres. Under lot 363, similar to our pair: "Another Vase Fire, decorated with mascarons and Fauna, entablature with daylight interlacing & rose garlands, set on a round pedestal, trimmed on the face with a helmet surrounded by oak branches with base with elaborate moldings, & two-part arched cover with rosette squares & gauntlets, with grid, shovel, tweezers and pincers. ». This lot was sold to the merchant Payant for 399 pounds. The andirons did not reappear until 1965, at a sale held by Me Ader, Palais Galliera, on June 11, 1965, lot 21, and we then lost track of these andirons. Details of the 1782 death inventory: Thanks to information provided by Mrs Sylvia Vriz, the four fires published in the 1782 sale catalogue are mentioned in the apartments on the first floor of the hotel. Lot 363 can be recognized under number 454: "in the second salon overlooking the Place Louis XV (corner salon)/Item a fire grate in two parts, shovel, tweezers and tongs of polished iron with vase ornament and cover in gold-plated copper, valued at 160 livres", or under number 474: "in the bedroom overlooking the rue des Champs Elysées (large room with alcove of the duke, on the current rue Boissy d'Anglas)/Item a fire grate in two parts shovel and tweezers and pliers of polished iron with ornaments with vases and gilded copper covering, a broom and a bellows, a fire guard with six leaves of tin, taken 160 livres ". The carved decoration of these two rooms presented like our pair of andirons trophies of weapons. For the bedroom, there is a drawing by Pâris. For the corner room, a photograph from the beginning of the 20th century.
