NICOLAS JEAN BAPTISTE RAGUENET (1715-1793)... - Lot 5 - Osenat
NICOLAS JEAN BAPTISTE RAGUENET (1715-1793) Paris, le pont de la Tournelle et le chevet de Notre-Dame Canvas mounted on cardboard Without frame Height: 32 cm Width: 60 cm Signed on the right and dated 1757 Trained by his father, Jean-Baptiste Raguenet, is a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc, Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas Raguenet specialized in views of Paris. The majority of his works focus on the banks of the Seine and the surrounding streets. His paintings capture accurate perspectives of a Paris in perpetual transformation. Between 1700 and 1800 Paris was transformed from a medieval to a modern city. The painting is an image of a Paris that has disappeared. The perspective seems to be taken from the Île Louviers, which was named quai Henri IV from the 19th century onwards. The view looks out over the Pont de la Tournelle, which connects Paris with the Île Saint-Louis, and the Île de la Cité in the background with the cathedral of Notre-Dame. On the left, you can see the arch of the Porte Saint-Bernard, also known as the Porte de la Tournelle, and its castle which was destroyed in 1787. The building on the Île Saint-Louis is the Hôtel de Bretonvillers, mostly destroyed in 1874.
