Pair of green varnished sheet metal wall lamps with gilded decoration, equipped with a quinquet lamp, the sheath tank decorated with a bust of Diana, horns of plenty, thyrses, satyr masks surmounted by palmettes and a drapery. Small lampshade in sheet metal Empire period (electrically mounted, repairs to the decoration and restorations) Provenance: Jean LEFEVRE (1908-1965) collection, architect. At the end of the 18th century, a chemist, Argand, perfected oil lighting, but it is the name of his worker Quinquet that has been retained to qualify this lighting system. This oil lamp is to be compared with the example kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, surmounted by a Roman soldier's head, reproduced in" Nietta Aprà, Le Mobilier Empire, Paris 1972, Grange Batelière Ed. p.55, fig. 86.
