SEVRES Two covered decoction pots in porcelain... - Lot 272 - Osenat
SEVRES Two covered decoction pots in porcelain of the second size with gold decoration on an agate blue background of palmettes, garlands of ivy and rosettes. One marked: SEVRES 33 and stamp of the castle of Saint-Cloud. The other one marked: N crowned, DORE A SEVRES, 64. Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III periods, 1834 and 1864. H. 21 cm. The agate blue background appeared on the hard porcelain in Sevres from 1773. It is then named blue of agate. Among the first porcelains decorated with this new ground, King Louis XV buys in August 1773 a pair of ear vases of the third agate blue size decorated with the portraits of Madame and Madame Elisabeth. At the same time, some porcelains are described with agate grey or dolphin grey and dauphine grey background. Are these variations or other names for the same background? This background color will not cease to be used, associated in the 19th century with fashionable decorations: historical scenes, cameo portraits, animals, flowers, etc. In January 1832, a new agate blue service was delivered for the Château de Saint-Cloud and then Compiègne from January 1833. It is described service "bottom blue agate frieze of palmettes printed in gold rosettes in the middle of the parts which are susceptible of it". The deliveries specify that it is intended for the Service of the King. Between 1832 and 1847, several thousand pieces were delivered for these two residences.
