THEODORE DECK (1823-1891) Pair of small vases... - Lot 263 - Osenat
THEODORE DECK (1823-1891) Pair of small vases of tapered form in turquoise enamelled porcelain said "Bleu de Deck" with decoration in relief of a varanid. Marked .TH. D. under the base Bronze mounting, the bases openwork and decorated with a frieze of godrons. Second half of the 19th century (one base to be reattached, some cracks, a hair) Provenance: Hector Le Fuel Joseph Théodore DECK and his elder brother Xavier created their company in 1858. They settled in Paris at 46, boulevard Saint-Jacques one year later. At first, they only made stove linings, but then they diversified their production and started to make ceramics for building linings and shaped pieces. In 1861, at the Salon des arts et industries de Paris on the Champs-Élysées, Théodore Deck exhibited for the first time: pieces covered with a turquoise blue enamel were noted and he was awarded a silver medal. In 1862 at the Universal Exhibition in London, he wins over English customers. At the Industrial Arts Exhibition in 1864, Deck presented pieces covered with transparent, non-cracking enamel. He explained the manufacture and qualities of these transparent enamels when he published his treatise La faïence in 1887. A year later, he made the first attempts at reliefs under transparent enamels and never abandoned this technique, which was taken up by many factories. He created characters, birds, flowers and all kinds of ornaments under a turquoise, green, yellow or manganese glaze. It is above all a characteristic blue that the public retains from this technique: a bright turquoise shade that he immediately adopted under the name of "Bleu de Deck" or "Deck Blue" like the vases we are presenting today. On the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1867, the factory receives a silver medal thanks, among other things, to the metallic reflections that he obtains on certain pieces. Theodore Deck was appointed in 1875 at the head of the commission of improvement of the Manufacture of Sèvres THEODORE DECK (1823-1891) PAIR OF SMALL TAPERED PORCELAIN VASES SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
