1985 YAMAHA XTZ 600 TENERE
Serial number 026350 Sold with a copy of the French car registration document. Since the end of the seventies, trail bikes (all-purpose road-road all-terrain motorcycles) have been a huge success in Europe, especially in the Latin countries, France and Italy. Yamaha made the most of this new trend and led the market for a long time with its DT/MX 125 and XT 500, which marked the return of the four-stroke single-cylinder engine. But we had to evolve. Constantly on the lookout for new niches to develop, the Amsterdam-based team in charge of defining new products for Europe, of which I had the honour of being a member, left the Japanese officials in awe at the very beginning of the eighties by asking for a curious motorcycle with a 30 l tank and a single or twin-cylinder engine (already requested at the start, but it would only come out ten years later!). An incomprehensible motorcycle for Japan, high in the saddle, heavy and difficult to manoeuvre. This totally out of the ordinary concept, finally accepted by the Japanese factory after years of insistence from the European product planning, would nevertheless seduce France and Italy (and later other countries) and give birth to one of the best-selling and most famous models in Yamaha's history, the 600 Ténéré. The Paris-Dakar Rally was then experiencing its greatest hours of glory and this Ténéré, named after the great African desert crossed by the rally, was a brilliant idea that used the image of these adventure motorcycles to offer the market a new breed of grand touring machines, capable of going anywhere, simple to maintain and affordable while offering the very rewarding image of a big motorcycle. 4 t air-cooled single cylinder - 595 cm3 (95 x 84 mm) - 43 hp/6,500 rpm - 5 mkg at 5,500 rpm - Single ACT chain driven, 4 valves - Internal balance balancers - YDIS dual body system Ø 27 mm x 2 - Electronic ignition - Dry sump - 5 speed gearbox - Kick start - Single split cradle frame - Front suspension Telescopic front, oscillating rear single shock absorber with linkage - Travels front/rear 300 mm - Disc brakes front, rear drum brakes - Tyres front 21", rear 18" - Fuel tank 27 l - 177 kg - 160 km/h. White for Italy or blue for France, the Ténéré 600 sold 61,000 units in Europe (including 20,500 in France) from 1983 to its end in 1993. This Yamaha XTZ 600 Ténéré is in average original condition. It needs a restoration. Its engine is not blocked. Sold without key. Thanks to François-Marie Dumas and his website moto-collection.org for the help on the description of this bike.
