1958 MERCEDES-BENZ 190 SL
Type R121 Serial number 7502079 Matching Number Nice condition of restoration French registration Presented in 1954 in New York, the Mercedes 190 SL was designed to be a small 300 SL. Derived from the mythical model with the star, this small Roadster was designed in collaboration with Max Hoffman, the Mercedes importer in the United States. This Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine in line, of 1897 cm3 developing 105 CV thanks to two carburetors. The engine is coupled to a 4 speed manual gearbox. The chassis is based on an independent front suspension and rear swing axles with coil springs and 4 hydraulic drum brakes. With the 300 SL, both cars are the first of the SL range for "Sport Leicht", which can be roughly translated as "Light Sport"; and even if the 190 gets aluminium doors, it still weighs more than 1100 kg, a very Germanic concept of lightness compared to the British roadsters that were common in the mid 1950s. It was the work of in-house designers Karl Wilfert and Walter Hackert, who were commissioned to create a car that resembled the 300SL but was 30 cm smaller. It was derived from the platform chassis of the modest 180 sedan, which was shortened by 25 cm. The body is made of steel but the four doors (doors, rear trunk and engine hood) are made of aluminum. The 190 SL ends its career with a total production of 25881 units. To replace the 300 SL butterfly, the 1957 Geneva Motor Show will be the launching pad for the 190 SL's big sister: the 300 SL roadster. This one looks very similar to the 190 convertible but the dimensions are not the same. These two convertibles will be replaced in 1963 by a novelty which will be positioned in an intermediate range, the 230 SL Pagoda. The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL that we present to you was registered for the first time in December 1958 in the United States. The model presented here has been entirely restored according to the rules of art. This is what you might call a "competition" restoration. The 190 SL's sensual forms, its build quality and its solidity are its strong points. It is an extremely robust car, intended for a clientele more interested in an elegant car than a performance car. In the tradition of Mercedes Benz, this car is very well built and allows a daily use. Aesthetically, a beautiful black paint covers the body where the new chrome takes place. The sand colored leather interior is also in very good condition and brings a lot of elegance to this convertible. The black soft top is also new, thick and perfectly waterproof, it allows driving in all seasons. Mechanically, the 4 cylinders engine is behaving well, Weber carburetors have replaced the original ones in order to bring a better reliability as well as a slight gain of power. A competition weapon, our car will not fail to turn heads when you drive by; fully restored, it is a rare and mythical convertible that is just waiting for you to take it for a wonderful ride.
