JEAN BAPTISTE ANDRE GAUTIER D'AGOTY (PARIS... - Lot 38 - Osenat
JEAN BAPTISTE ANDRE GAUTIER D'AGOTY (PARIS 1740-1786) Portrait of a Lady with a Flower Basket Oval canvas Signed and dated on the right Painted by the / Chr D'Agoty / Painter of the / Queen in / 1785 Without frame. (Old restorations) Jean-Baptiste André GAUTIER-DAGOTY, or GAUTIER D'AGOTY (Paris, 1740 - Paris, 1786) French painter, specialized in the art of the portrait. Son of the engraver Jacques Gautier d'Agoty, he had four brothers, all artists: Honoré-Louis, Jean-Fabien, Édouard (whose son Pierre-Édouard Dagoty will also become an artist), and Arnauld-Éloi Gautier-Dagoty. Knight of the Order of St. John Lateran, he is sometimes called "Le Chevalier Dagoty". He was also the author of unfinished works: Galerie des hommes et des femmes célèbres qui ont paru en France (1770), and La Monarchie française (1770). Making his career in Paris, he became the protégé of Marie-Antoinette, who commissioned him to paint a portrait to send to Vienna. This painting was finally offered by the queen to Prince Georg Adam von Starhemberg in 1777, and then given to the National Museum of the Château de Versailles by Commander Paul-Louis Weiller in 1954. Gautier-Dagoty also painted portraits of the Countess of Provence and the Countess of Artois, the Queen's sisters-in-law. The majority of his works are now preserved in the National Museum of the Château of Versailles. Gautier-Dagoty is the author of a gouache on paper representing him painting the queen (he drew the portrait in 1775), while she is playing the harp in her room with her friends and suite. A woman hands the queen a note on which Gautier-Dagoty asks her to name him her personal painter.
