L'ÉPINE A PARIS. Rare pocket watch, present... - Lot 37 - Osenat
L'ÉPINE A PARIS. Rare pocket watch, present day, with front winding key in yellow gold, white enamelled dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic for the minutes, square winding at two o'clock. Chased and set hands. The openworked case back is set with a glass revealing the rooster movement decorated with foliated scrolls surmounted by a fleur-de-lys crown set, like the bezel and the edge, with rose-cut rhinestones (six stones missing). Escapement with meeting wheel, fusee with chain. Dial signed "L'EPINE A PARIS". Second half of the 18th century. Diameter : 40 mm. Gross weight : 46 g. History: This very high quality watch is probably a present model as evidenced by the fleurdelysed crown in the rooster decoration. Several watches of a similar model can be found in the collections of the Château de Versailles, signed "L'EPINE A PARIS" with openwork rooster decoration, decorated with rhinestones or diamonds. The cases are sometimes decorated with miniatures. Biography : Jean-Antoine LEPINE (1720-1814), clockmaker of the King in Paris. He invented the calibre that bears his name, in which the spindle is removed and the upper plate is replaced by bridges. He also claimed to have invented the comma escapement. He came to Paris and served in 1744 as an apprentice to André-Charles Caron (1697-1775), the King's watchmaker, whose daughter he married. He became the watchmaker to Louis XV, Louis XVI, and later to Napoleon I. He is the author of the clock that adorns the King's office at the Château de Versailles. Presented jointly with the Cabinet Emeric & Stephen PORTIER.
