1972 TRIUMPH STAG MARK 1
1964: Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti develops a grand touring convertible based on a Triumph 2000 saloon. Harry Webster, Triumph's chief engineer, was seduced by his friend's model and decided to launch it into production. This was a good thing, because Triumph was looking more and more at the American market. And a 4-seater convertible with a V8 engine would be perfectly suited. To meet American safety standards, Triumph fitted a roll bar to its convertible. Under the hood, engineers decided to develop their own V8 engine. This engine, specific to this model, had alloy cylinder heads and an overhead camshaft per cylinder bank. With a displacement of 3 liters, fed by two Stromberg carburetors, it developed 147 horsepower and could be combined with a 4-speed manual gearbox (overdrive optional) or a 3-speed automatic transmission. The chassis was perfectly modern for its time, with a self-supporting body and 4 independent wheels.
It was not a small British roadster, but an attempt to enter the top of the range of Triumph, which was at the time very successful with its Spitfire, a range below. In 1970, when it was released, it was necessary to seduce a wealthy clientele.
Less than 26,000 units were produced between November 1969 and June 1977.
