Musée de Saint-Brieuc, November 1988-January 1989, p. 42 (first sculpted study from 1951, illustrated). - R. Aujame and F. de Franclieu, Fondation Le Corbusier, Le Corbusier / Savina, dessins et sculptures, Editions Philippe Sers, Paris, 1984, pp. 58-59 (two other illustrated preparatory drawings) and p. 92, no. 23 (the sculpted version, illustrated in color, pp. 60-61). NOTICE: Originating as a conception in 1936, the original study was the subject of preparatory projects around 1951, with a view to a sculpture in 1961. Le Corbusier explained in his diary the origin of the theme of L'enfant est là. In 1936, while travelling through the deserts of South America, the artist had a vision of a black woman carrying a child on her back. He found it interesting, and Le Corbusier made several sketches of it (ref. cited in Fondation Le Corbusier, Le Corbusier / Savina, dessins et sculptures, Editions Philippe Sers, Paris, 1984, p. 92). "My dear Savina, I made a large drawing in Chandigarh a long time ago, about 1.10 meters in size. This drawing has remained in Chandigarh and I give you a photo of it. It is a sculpture of which you have already made a significant prototype, which is excellent but very small. I think we should not let down all these great efforts that you have made and I have made. And we must remember that it is the great sculptures that made the 'Totem' effect" (Letter from Le Corbusier to Joseph Savina, quoted in Fondation Le Corbusier, Le Corbusier / Savina, dessins et sculptures, Editions Philippe Sers, Paris, 1984, p. 92)
