COMPIGNIÉ View of Twickenham of rectangular... - Lot 188 - Osenat
COMPIGNIÉ View of Twickenham of rectangular form with polychrome watercolor, gilt and silver decoration. 18th century Height 23.5 cm - Width 31.5 cm (wear) Painter and tabletier of King Louis XV, Compigné specialized in the manufacture of relief paintings on pewter of exceptional quality. Coming from Italy, Compigné settled in Paris at the sign of King David on rue Greneta and specialized in boxes, tric-trac, checkers and chess games, snuffboxes and cane handles in blond tortoiseshell inlaid with gold. His technique, which remains mysterious, consists of placing a sheet of pewter previously stamped on a matrix on a scale or metal support, which he then decorates with gouache, gold and silver with a coloured varnish. His themes of inspiration were views of castles, views of Paris and numerous genre and pastoral scenes as well as repeats of paintings by well-known painters.
