FRENCH SCHOOL ACCORDING TO THE ANTIQUE Venus Callipygeus Statue in white marble H. 83 cm Restorations Related works: -Venus Callipyge, 1st century, marble, H. 152 cm, Italy, Naples, National Archaeological Museum, inv. CSE-S-000453-9618 , -Jean-Jacques Clérion (1637-1714), Venus Callypige Farnese, 1684-1686, marble, H. 240 cm, Versailles, Château de Versailles, inv. MR 1788 This sculpture is a reduction of Roman marble dating from the 1st century, made on the model of a Greek original from the Hellenistic period, discovered during the excavations of the Domus aurea, or Golden House, in Rome. At the request of Louis XIV, two sculptors reproduced this Venus. Jean-Jacques Clérion remained true to the model while François Barois (1656-1726) dared to make a few improvements. The Roman version, now preserved in Naples, although criticized for its drapery and the restorations made by Albacini, was much admired in the 18th century, copied and reproduced in various materials.
