Important suite of 18 drawings and black pencil sketches by Hortense's hand from a travel notebook, representing characters, villages and views of Queen Hortense's journey in the South West in 1807 including: " View of the Gave waterfall " " View of a Roman aqueduct " dated August 1807 " View of the passage near St Sebastian " " View of the Ponylahne chapel in the Azun valley ". This is the chapel of Pouey Laün, still visible today. " View of the passage 1807 " " Naked bathers in Biariz near Bayonne " Drawings are attached, portraits of Emperor Napoleon I in profile bust, presumed self-portrait of Hortense and Louis Bonaparte. In a binding with a label "Coiffier Marchand de couleurs Rue du Coq St Honoré n°121". A.B.E. Around 1805. History : The label of Coiffier allows us to date the purchase of the binding and the notebook of the year 1805 (the n°121 of the Rue du Coq St Honoré being used by Coiffier during this year). After the death of her eldest son Napoleon Charles in 1807, Hortense made a trip to the South West of France where she put into practice her talent for drawing, learned from Madame Campan among others. She visits Lourdes, Pau, Biarritz, Anglet. She crosses the border without authorization to visit St Sebastien.
