Guido SIGRISTE (1864-1915). Officer of the hussars of death. Revolutionary period Oil on canvas (rentoilé), signed and dated 1890 lower right. Gilt frame. 27 x 19 cm. History: Created in June 1792, two companies of hussars take the name of "hussars of death", in response to the threat posed to Paris by the Duke of Brunswick. The symbol of this unit is atypical in French uniformology: a skull surmounting two crossed shins. On September 20, 1792, they were engaged in the battle of Valmy where they forced the Prussian infantry to retreat alongside Kellerman's army. On 5 December 1792, within the Moselle army, they captured Sarrebourg but in turn retreated against the Prussians. On 5 March 1793, the Convention decided to create the 14th Mounted Chasseurs Regiment with the survivors of the two companies of Hussars of Death. Biography: Guido SIGRISTE (1864-1915) Painter of history and military subjects. He was a pupil of Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefèbvre in Paris. He began in 1891 at the Salon des Artistes Français where he exhibited a painting (Le Défilé). Then he devoted himself to the Napoleonic epic of which he was one of the most conscientious painters. He represented Napoleon I during his most memorable feats of arms. Many of his works have been acquired by museums. These works are always full of movement, there is a lot of ardour and delicacy. At the age of 50, he joined the Foreign Legion and was wounded and died of his wounds on March 14, 1915.
